It was a big week in Morgan County basketball as the Coalfield Lady Jackets toppled top-ranked Sunbright 47-39 on Friday evening. The Lady Jackets used strong post play to down the Lady Tigers, who were previously unbeaten in district play and ranked No. 9 in the state. Coalfield post players Jayleigh Bunch and Alexis Morrison accounted for more than half of Coalfield’s points in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. With the score tied 39-39 with 1:05 to go, the Lady Jackets scored the final eight points of the game as they avenged their earlier 45-48 loss to Sunbright on January 10 on the Lady Tigers’ home floor.

With the win, Coalfield moves to 5-2 in district play, only one-half game behind the Lady Tigers, who now have a 5-1 record. Coalfield has only one district game remaining – the Lady Jackets play last-place Oliver Springs on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers have two tough district games remaining, playing on the road at Oneida on Tuesday and facing Wartburg at home on Friday.

The week of February 7 concludes regular season play in both Districts 3-A and 4-A.
