Anderson Pitches No-Hitter to Kick Off Lady Bulldogs 2022 Season
By Terry Futrell
Imagine the pressure when your coach selects you as the starting pitcher in the first softball game of the season. This was the situation faced by Wartburg Central’s Cassidy Anderson Tuesday evening as the Lady Bulldogs faced Rockwood in the first game of the 2022 official season. Nervous? She must have been, because Anderson hit the first Rockwood batter with her first pitch, putting a runner on first base. But from that point on, Anderson was almost perfect, striking out nine of the remaining 13 batters she faced, and allowing no hits while walking no batters as she pitched the Lady Bulldogs to a 13-0 victory over the Rockwood Lady Tigers.
Anderson’s teammates provided support by hitting Rockwood pitcher Haleigh Griffis for three doubles and eight singles in three innings. The Lady Bulldogs scored 13 runs on 11 hits, recording five walks, nine RBIs, and only three strikeouts. Kenna Bales hit two doubles and Caleigh Crouch added a double and a single. Kylie Francis, Jade Brooks, Cassidy Anderson, Madison Starkey, Lauren Young, and Maelee Hamby all hit singles for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lady Bulldog fielders did their part by making no errors in the game, compared to five errors for Rockwood.
Wartburg scored four runs in the first inning, then added two more runs in the second. The Lady Bulldog offense exploded in the third inning with seven runs. Anderson retired Rockwood batters three-up, three-down in the top of the fourth inning with two strikeouts and a popup, sealing the 13-0 victory for Wartburg.
