Van Buren County Wins District 3A Volleyball Championship

By Terry Futrell – October 5, 2018

The Van Buren County Eaglettes continued their conquest of District 3 volleyball teams by defeating Bledsoe County 3-0 in the district championship game on October 4. The Eaglettes finished regular season district play with a 13-1 record, losing only to Coalfield 2-3 in a tie-breaker match on August 30. Van Buren turned the tables on the Lady Jackets on September 25 by winning another close tie-breaker match, defeating Coalfield 3-2. During the season, Van Buren lost only five sets in their 17 district matches, four of which were to Coalfield.

Van Buren defeated Oakdale 3-0  in the first round of the district tournament on Monday, and then ended Wartburg’s season in the semifinals on Tuesday, also winning 3-0. The stage was set for a showdown with second-seed Bledsoe County in the championship match last night. Bledsoe had lost only two district matches, both to Van Buren, and was hoping to finally take down the Eaglettes from their lofty perch in the championship game. It was not to be as Van Buren took the match 3-0, winning the three sets 25-17, 25-19, and 25-22.

The 2018 season has been a remarkable turn-around for the Eaglettes who finished in last place in the district in 2017. The Eaglettes disciplined play and excellence of technique have definitely raised the bar for other District 3 teams.
