Lady Jackets Fall to Meigs County in Region 2A Volleyball

After getting off to a great start and soundly defeating the Meigs County Lady Tigers in the opening set of their Region 2A tournament match, the Coalfield Lady Jackets ran into a roadblock and lost the next three sets and the match to Meigs County. The loss to Meigs County was a repeat of the previous season when the Lady Jackets also lost to the Lady Tigers in the Region 2A semifinals.
Coalfield fought toe-to-toe with Meigs County in the first set. The set was tied five times before Coalfield took the lead for good at 13-12 and pulled away to win the set 25-18. The Lady Jackets played aggressively in the set, racking up 11 kills to only five kills for Meigs County. Solid defensive play by the Lady Jackets was a major factor in holding the Lady Tigers to a small number of kills. Taylor Landrum led the way for Coalfield with six kills.
Meigs County fought back in the second set, aggressively attacking at the net. After the score was tied at 1-1, 4-4, 5-5, 7-7, and 9-9, Meigs County slowly pulled away and led by five points at 20-15. The Lady Jackets closed the gap to two points at 22-20, but Meigs County once again pulled ahead to win the set 25-20. Meigs County had a 9-6 advantage in kills in the set. Alexis Morrison led the Lady Jackets with three kills and Jayleigh Bunch added two kills.
The third set turned into a total disaster for Coalfield as the Lady Jackets backed off their aggressive play. Meigs County took advantage and stepped up their attacks at the net, scoring 11 kills to only four kills for Coalfield. The Lady Jackets trailed throughout the set, with Meigs County winning the set 25-10, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Lady Jackets came out fighting in the fourth set and took an early 2-0 lead. From there the teams swapped the lead six times before Meigs County inched their way ahead at 10-9. Meigs County pulled ahead by three points at 12-9, but Coalfield closed the gap to 17-16. The Lady Jackets stayed close, trailing by only one point at 19-18. Meigs County then pulled away to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
The loss brings an end to a highly successful season for the Lady Jackets, who were the District 3A runners-up. Meigs County plays Van Buren County Tuesday evening for the Region 2A championship.
