Coalfield vs Oakdale Preview

By Greg Addington

The Yellow Jackets complete the 2020 Morgan County football schedule Friday night hosting Oakdale on Rochelle Field.  The first game based on current documentation occurred back in 1945 and Oakdale won what was the largest margin of victory on their side of the series with a final score of 66-0.  The Eagles would go on to win the first four games of the series until Coach WD Sisson’s 1947 squad captured Coalfield’s first win in the series with a 12-6 victory on 9/5/1947.  However, that four game win streak to begin the series would be the longest that Oakdale has enjoyed to date.

The Eagles defeated Wartburg last week on John R Dillon Field in Wartburg, 30-22.  Coach JR Voyles’ squad snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bulldogs and are 3-1, their best opening to a season since 2014.  Against Wartburg, Oakdale quarterback Tyler Boyer threw for two touchdowns, each to Eloy Vera, and ran for a third score.  The game winning score came on a Timmy Holder five-yard run with a minute to play in the game.

Coalfield defeated Sunbright in their first Saturday game since 2001, winning 50-28 over the Tigers.  Canaan Bowling led the way for the Yellow Jackets, running for 134 yards on eight carries and scoring three touchdowns.  Seth Lowe added a rushing touchdown and a 62-yard kickoff return for another score and Cole Hines was 10-of-15 passing for 124 yards and a touchdown pass to Landon Lowe.  Defensively, Landon Lowe and Bowling led the team in tackles with eight and six respectively and Michael Landrum returned a Sunbright intercepted pass 35-yards for a fourth quarter score.

Coalfield hosts Oakdale Friday night at Rochelle Field for Homecoming.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm.
