Lady Jackets Fall to Meigs County in Region 2A Semifinals

The Coalfield Lady Jackets saw their volleyball season come to an abrupt end as they fell to the Meigs County Lady Tigers 3-0 in the Region 2A semifinals at Van Buren High School Monday evening. The heartbreaking loss also signaled the end of high school volleyball for several seniors on the team.

Meigs County took an 8-0 lead in the first set by serving aces in four of their first seven serves. Coalfield closed the gap to five points at 11-6 before Lady Tiger Ansley Wade served six consecutive points, including three aces. The Lady Tigers continued to pull away and closed out the set 25-9 with an ace. Meigs County served a total of eight aces in the set.

Coalfield fell behind early in the second set, but tied the score at 5-5. The score was tied once again at 7-7 before Meigs County pulled away to win the set 25-14.

Meigs County built an 8-2 lead in the third set before the Lady Jackets began to come alive. Coalfield was down 14-8 before beginning a serious comeback. The Lady Jackets tied the score at 18-18 and then pulled ahead to lead the Lady Tigers 24-21, needing only one point to win the set. Meigs County came back to score five straight points, winning the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.

The Lady Jackets completed their highly successful regular season 14-2, losing only to Van Buren County. Coalfield defeated Wartburg in the first round of the district and Then defeated Bledsoe County in the semifinals before losing to Van Buren County in the district finals in their best performance of the 2019 season. Several key players on the Lady Jacket team will return for the 2020 season, promising another exciting season for Coalfield fans.
