By Terry Futrell
After their disappointing loss to Harriman on Thursday, the Coalfield Lady Jackets came through with one of their best performances and defeated District 3-A leader Harriman 7-3 to force the Lady Devils into a repeat matchup for the district championship.
Coalfield pitcher Anna Smith led the charge for the Lady Jackets, hitting two-for-three and recording three RBIs. Both of Smith’s hits were home runs driven deep over the fence.
Micaela Goins hit two-for-four for Harriman and had two RBIs. Goins drove the ball deep over the left field fence with one on base in the bottom of the first inning to give Harriman an early 2-0 lead. Harriman added another score in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Coalfield finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when Smith hit her first home run with Mackenzy Morgan on base.
Smith hit a solo home run over the center field fence in the top of the sixth inning. Harriman could not respond and the game entered the final inning tied 3-3.
Refusing to be beaten, Coalfield batters took control in the top of the seventh. Taylor Landrum singled on a ground ball to the shortstop and then advanced to second base on an error by Harriman. Alexis Morrison followed with a single to right field. Mikayla Heidle singled to the shortstop, loading the bases. After two outs, Mackenzy Morgan tripled on a fly ball to right field, scoring Landrum, Morrison, and Heidle. Anna Smith drew a walk. With runners at first and third, Carlee Kees stepped up and belted a single to center field, scoring Morgan. The Lady Jackets closed out the top of the seventh leading 7-3.
Coalfield made short work of Harriman in the bottom of the seventh. Shillings flied out to left field, Micaela Goins was out on a grounder to shortstop Malachi Armes, and Autumn Phillips flied out to center fielder Heidle.
The loss was the first for Harriman in district play in the 2019 season. The victory gave Coalfield one more opportunity to face the Lady Devils for the district championship.
