Oakdale Lady Eagles Overpowered 64-24 by Class 3A Anderson County
The Oakdale Lady Eagles found Class 3A Anderson County to be a formidable challenge Friday evening. After taking a 24-7 first quarter lead, the Lady Mavericks continued to dominate throughout the game and defeated Oakdale 64-24. The Lady Mavericks poured in an astounding 15 3-point baskets in the contest, while Oakdale was blanked in 3-point shooting.
Victoria Jones led the Lady Eagles with 11 points and Delaney Hicks scored 10 points. Anderson County was led by Brooklyn McCoy with 16 points. Juliann Smith added 13 points and Maci Houser scored 10 points for the Lady Mavericks.
Oakdale completed district play Tuesday evening and finished the season as the seventh-seed in the tournament. Oakdale will play Coalfield in the opening round of the District 3-1A tournament at Coalfield Monday at 7:00 PM.
Oakdale Eagles Score Big to Defeat Anderson County 92-78
The Oakdale Eagles played like a well-oiled machine as they defeated Class 3A Anderson County for the second time this season. Oakdale took a 24-15 first quarter lead, but Anderson County outscored the Eagles 26-20 in the second period to reduce Oakdale’s lead at halftime to 44-41. Oakdale came out of the locker room and dominated Anderson County in the third quarter 28-16. The Eagles stayed with Anderson County in the fourth period and gained the 92-78 victory.
The Anderson County Mavericks were caught in a deluge as Oakdale rained 12 3-point baskets. Dawson Smith and Clayton Smith each scored four treys, while Garrett Best had three and Rhett Nelson added one 3-point basket. Oakdale had five players in double figures. Best led all scorers in the game with 25 points. Nelson scored 17 points. Dawson Smith and Clayton Smith each scored 16 points, and Ian Goldston added 10 points for Oakdale. Dawson Smith reached a 1,000-point scoring milestone in the game. Anderson County was led by Tanner Davis with 20 points. Stanton Martin and Harrison Ogburn added 15 points each, and Grant Hayes scored 12 points for the Mavericks.
With the victory over Anderson County, third-seed Oakdale fired a shot across the bow of District 3-1A opponents as they get ready for the district tournament next week. The Eagles are playing their best team ball of the season and are capable of taking the District 3-1A championship. Oakdale plays the winner of the Sunbright-Midway game next Thursday at Oakdale at 7:00 PM in the district tournament.
Sunbright Lady Tigers Down Coalfield 53-38
The Sunbright Lady Tigers continued their quest for the District 3-1A championship as they defeated the Coalfield Lady Jackets 53-38 Friday evening. Sunbright took a 15-9 first-quarter lead and led the Lady Jackets 27-13 at the half. Coalfield played close the second half, but could not overcome the first half deficit and lost the game 53-38.
Sunbright’s Makenna Brown led all scorers with 21 points. Olivia Northrup added 14 points and Taylor Cox scored 10 points for the Lady Tigers. Coalfield was led by Malachi Armes with 10 points.
Coalfield enters the district tournament as the sixth seed and faces seventh-seed Oakdale at home on Monday at 7:00 PM. Sunbright finishes the regular season in second place and will play in the District 3-1A semifinals next Friday at Roane State Community College in Harriman at 8:00 PM.
Sunbright Comes from Behind in 4thQuarter to Defeat Coalfield 80-75
The Sunbright Tigers used a 26-19 fourth quarter scoring advantage to defeat upset-minded Coalfield 80-75 Friday evening. Down 56-54 after three, Tigers Hunter Bunch and Wesley Bohanan combined for 17 points in the fourth quarter to bring Sunbright from behind to gain the victory. Coalfield took an early 22-20 lead, but Sunbright fought back and led 39-35 at the half. Coalfield once again took charge and outscored the Tigers 21-15 in the third quarter.
Sunbright’s Bunch led all scorers with 27 points. Bohanan added 17 points, while Josh Langley and John Freels scored 12 points each for the Tigers. Kyle Seiber had a good night, pouring in 19 points for Coalfield. Nathan Harvey was close behind with 18 points. Jeffrey Speer added 16 points for the Jackets, while Ashton Jones contributed 10 points.
Sunbright enters the District 3-1A tournament as sixth seed, while Coalfield is the ninth-seed team. Sunbright takes on Midway at Sunbright on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Coalfield travels to Wartburg where they will take on the fourth-seed Bulldogs on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Their seeding for the district tournament is not indicative of the level of play that both Sunbright and Coalfield have exhibited late in the season. Do not be surprised if either team pulls off a shocking upset in the district tournament.
Wartburg Lady Bulldogs Fall to Oneida 53-32
Shots that just would not go in, coupled with a large number of turnovers, many of them caused by Oneida’s impenetrable zone defense, doomed the Wartburg Lady Bulldogs to defeat by the Lady Indians 53-32. Wartburg took a 15-10 first-quarter lead, but it was all Indians after that. Oneida held the Lady Bulldogs to two points in the second quarter. Oneida led 19-17 at the break, then came out and dominated Wartburg throughout the second half.
Wartburg was led by Madison Williams with eight points, and Elizabeth Keathley added six points. Kendyl West led the Lady Indians with 14 points. Jayden Thomas added 13 points for Oneida, including four 3-point baskets. Katelyn Stiltner was a force inside, scoring 11 points.
Wartburg is fourth seed in the District 3-1A tournament and faces winless Rockwood Monday at Wartburg at 7:00 PM. The Oneida Lady Indians are top-seed in the tournament and will play in the semifinals on Friday at 6:30 PM.
Oneida Downs Wartburg 66-51
Oneida jumped out to a 21-12 first-quarter lead over Wartburg and expanded their lead to 36-17 at the half. The third quarter was more of the same as the Indians’ lead grew to 56-28. Although outscoring Oneida 23-10 in the fourth quarter, Wartburg’s comeback attempt fell far short as they were defeated by Oneida 66-51.
Oneida’s size, speed, and tight zone defense seemed to be factors in the Indians’ dominating victory. Wartburg was unable to penetrate for baskets inside, and hurried outside shots simply did not fall. Caleb Constant was high scorer for Wartburg with 12 points and Tucker Carroll added 1o points for the Bulldogs. Nate Bowling scored 15 points for Oneida, Kolby Morgan added 14 points, and Chance Botts scored 13 points for the Indians.
Fourth-seed Wartburg takes on Coalfield at Wartburg on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Second-seed Oneida next plays in the District 3-1A semifinals on Monday, February 18, at 8:00 PM at Roane State Community College in Harriman.
