Lady Eagles Fall to Oliver Springs 50-38

By Terry Futrell – November 27, 2018

Delivering what had to be their best performance of the young 2018 season, the Oakdale Lady Eagles fell short in the second half and the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats were victorious 50-38.

With their most balanced scoring to date, the Lady Eagles gave Oliver Springs some real competition for the first 16 minutes Tuesday evening. Oakdale scored first at 5:17 of the first period and held the Lady Bobcats scoreless for the first four minutes of the game.

Oliver Springs took the lead at 6-4 with 2:47 on the clock. The teams then matched each other point-for-point with Oliver Springs leading 11-9 with seconds to go in the first quarter. The Lady Eagles then sank a 3-pointer to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the period.

The second period was much like the first, with the lead changing three times. The Lady Bobcats took a 20-19 lead with 2:12 to go in the half. The Lady Eagles failed to score in the last three minutes of the second quarter and trailed 21-19 at the half.

The Lady Eagles zone defense forced Oliver Springs to pass across court to find shooting opportunities from the perimeter, and the Lady Bobcats never seemed to get into a rhythm throughout the first half. That changed in the third quarter as Mable Johnson and Cassidy Gilmore each put up seven points for Oliver Springs. The Lady Bobcats outscored Oakdale 17-10 in the third quarter and expanded their lead to 37-29.

The Lady Bobcats used ball control to pull Oakdale out of its zone defense in the fourth quarter. As a result, the Lady Bobcats were able to go inside and all of their scoring in the final quarter came from 2-point baskets. Oakdale played close but the Lady Eagles were again outscored by the Lady Bobcats 13-9.

Oliver Springs led 50-38 when the final horn sounded.

The Lady Eagles were 9 of 17 from 2-point range, shooting a respectable 53%. Oakdale connected on 11 of 16 free throws for 69%. The Lady Eagles snagged 17 defensive rebounds, but only eight on the offensive end of the court. Perhaps most negative about the Lady Eagles performance was their 12 turnovers.

The Lady Eagles had two players score in double figures – Ivy Tilson scored 12 points and Amelia Miller scored 11 points. Delaney Hicks was not far behind with eight points. This marked the first time in the 2018 season that Oakdale has had two players score in double figures.

The hoped-for victory was not achieved, but the Lady Eagles showed continued improvement in both individual performances and in team play against the Lady Bobcats. The Lady Eagles face Harriman on November 30 on the Lady Blue Devils home court.
