Coalfield vs Midway Game Preview
By Greg Addington
It’s another postseason rematch in the second round for Coalfield, who played Greenback in the second round in 2020 and this year will welcome Midway to Rochelle Field for Friday night’s second round 2021 contest. It will be the 46th meeting in the series history between the two schools and it will be fourth playoff game in a series that began in 1954. Coalfield won the regular season meeting down at Midway High School 41-34 back on 10/1/2021.
Last week, Coach Benson Napier earned his first career playoff victory with a 58-0 win over North Greene. Levi Mullins made the most of his two carries in the game, running for 111 yards and scoring both times in the rout. Mullins also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Luke Treece. Landon Lowe, Eli Justice and Canaan Bowling each ran for a touchdown and Coalfield got two pick sixes from Brock Jones and Eli Roberts. For the second straight game and the fourth time in 2021, the Jackets were awarded a safety when the defense stuffed a Husky run attempt near their goal line.
Dr. Ron Treadway’s Green Wave rallied on the legs of quarterback Emmett Hegland to defeat Unaka in their first round game on Goddard Field last week. Hegland ran for four fourth quarter scores, leading the Green Wave to a 42-26 win, ending the night with 211 yards passing and two touchdowns and 106 yards rushing. The victory snapped a three-game losing skid in first round games for the Wave, who are playing Coalfield in the playoffs for the first time since a 34-0 loss to the Jackets in the quarterfinal round in 2013.
Coalfield will host Midway on Friday night for the rights to play the winner of Oakdale and Cloudland, which is being played on John Orr Field in Roan Mountain. Kickoff on Rochelle Field is set for 7pm.
