Coalfield vs North Greene Playoff Preview
By Greg Addington
Within the sea of change that Coalfield School and the community has withstood in the last year, one constant has been the talent level and play within the football program, which will begin the school’s 34th postseason this Friday night, hosting Region 1A fourth seed North Greene on Rochelle Field. The program clinched their second straight Region 2A championship and will be playing their 75th playoff game when the Huskies come calling.
Coalfield completed the 2021 schedule with a 14-7 win over rival Oneida on Rochelle Field last Friday night. In what could best be described as a typical Coalfield-Oneida battle, the Indians scored first on a Rylin Duncan five-yard touchdown run and connected on the point after to lead 7-0. Coalfield would answer with two touchdown passes from quarterback Cole Hines to Landon Galyon and would be awarded a safety on a fumbled punt snap in the end zone to complete their third win in a row against Oneida and five of the last six. Cole Hines was 7-for-17 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns, Landon Lowe was leading rusher with 36 yards on six carries and Landon Galyon was the leading receiver with four receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
North Greene fell to Region 1A champion Cloudland at home last week 38-8. The lone Huskie score coming from a late Tyler Sanches touchdown run and two-point conversion. The Huskies are run heavy on the offensive side of the ball, operating out of the spread. Sanches, a senior, is the team’s leading rusher, however freshman Yeshua Vaught ran for 76 yards against the Highlanders. As a team, NGHS had 123 yards in total offense, all of which came by the ground game.
