Coalfield at Midway Game Preview
By Greg Addington
Coalfield returns to region action this week and will travel to the Emerald Forest to face Coach Ron Treadway’s Midway Greenwave for the 45th time in the all-time series between the two schools. The Jackets lead the series with 30 wins against 14 losses and enjoys a 14-8 edge in games played at Midway High School. The Jackets will have their hands full and will need to be ready for a battle if they want to extend their win streak against the Wave to eight games.
Last week, the Jackets fell for the second consecutive week with a 21-0 loss to middle Tennessee power Gordonsville. Coalfield struggled to move the football and didn’t have much luck stopping the Tigers, suffering back-to-back home setbacks for the first time since the 2015 season. Landon Lowe paced the Jackets defensively with ten total tackles and two sacks on the night and Cole Hines had eight total tackles.
Midway had their open week last week, but defeated Wartburg on John R. Dillon Field in Wartburg two weeks ago by a 40-14 final score. Senior quarterback Emmett Hegland threw for 231 yards on 12-of-18 passing and five touchdowns. Seth Gordon was the leading receiver with five catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Ty Mason led the way on the ground for Midway rushing for 98 yards on 15 carries and had a touchdown rushing and receiving.
This is a crucial game for the Green Wave with respect to playoff seeding as the Greenwave fell to Oakdale a few weeks ago in a 20-19 battle and want to keep pace with Oakdale and Harriman in the region playoff race. MHS still has Harriman, Sunbright, Greenback and Oliver Springs left to play, and a home playoff game is still possible for Dr. Treadway’s squad.
The Jackets and the Greenwave battle again down at Midway High School this Friday night with kickoff scheduled for 7:30pm.
