Coalfield vs Gordonsville Game Preview
By Greg Addington
Coalfield is back to their regular schedule (as far as today is concerned) and plans are to host Gordonsville on Friday night. Last year’s game was wiped out by COVID-19 and the Jackets took a victory while the Tigers had a no contest. Both schools met on the gridiron for the first time in the 2012 TSSAA Class A semifinals with Gordonsville gaining the upper hand. The Jackets won the regular season rematch back in 2019 on Turney Ford Field before last year’s cancellation. Gordonsville appears on the schedule again this year and the Jackets will travel west to face the Tigers next year.
Last week, Coalfield fought toe-to-toe with a very explosive offense and fell in the last seconds to Carter 34-30. Cole Hines shined for the Yellow Jackets, throwing for a career high 176 yards on 14-of-17 passing and threw for two touchdowns and rushing for two more. Landon Lowe and Coalton Henry shined defensively for CHS with 20 and 12 total tackles respectively. Coalfield took a loss overall with the defeat to Carter, however Coalfield did receive credit for a region win against Oakdale, completing the next step toward a region championship and top region seed in the postseason.
Offensively, the Tiger attack flows through quarterback Matthew Albritton. The junior passed for 228 yards and threw for two touchdowns on 14-of-20 passing in Gordonsville’s 21-7 win at 3A Stewart County last Friday night. The other Gordonsville score was thrown by Peyton Climer, a wide receiver who also took a snap at quarterback during the first Tiger scoring drive. Climer, Treyson Davis, Landon Baker and Brady Gentry are the primary targets in the passing game and Canaan Musgrove is the running back in the Tiger offense. Defensively, the Tigers operate out of a 3-4. Stewart County had some success in their short passing game, but the Tigers were able to get some turnovers to help stem the tide.
Coalfield hosts Gordonsville on Friday night on Rochelle Field with kickoff scheduled for 7:30pm.
