Sunbright Falls to Harriman 45-0

By Terry Futrell

The Sunbright Tigers came away empty-handed Friday evening, losing to the Harriman Blue Devils  45-0 on the road.

There is mystique associated with the number 7, but the Tigers probably hope they never see it again – at least on the jersey of Camyan Campbell, Harriman’s version of number 7. Harriman returned the opening kickoff to their own 31-yard line. On the very first play from scrimmage, Campbell scampered 69 yards for a Blue Devil touchdown. Unfortunately for Sunbright, this was a picture of things to come throughout the game.

Campbell rushed seven times for 97 yards for the Blue Devils, twice for touchdowns, and caught two passes for 39 yards and one touchdown. The Blue Devils racked up 350 total yards offense with 232 yards rushing and 118 yards passing. In stark contrast, Sunbright tallied only -3 yards total offense with -7 yards rushing and 4 yards passing.

Defense was a key to the Blue Devil victory, with 6’4” sophomore defensive end Xavier Hickman spending much time in the Sunbright backfield. With Chase Johnson being immovable by Sunbright on the opposite side of Harriman’s defensive line, the Blue Devil defense was almost impenetrable by Sunbright.

While Sunbright’s offense was stymied throughout the game, the Tiger defense performed well until midway in the second quarter, giving up only one score and trailing 8-0. Take away the one big play by Campbell at the beginning of the game and it was a very close defensive battle. Vastly outnumbered in manpower, fatigue finally began to take its toll on Sunbright, and Harriman’s offense began to rack up the points. The Blue Devils scored 30 points in the last half of the second quarter to lead 38-0 at the half.

With a non-stop clock in effect, the Tigers only had three possessions in the second half, twice going three-and-out in the third quarter and losing a fumble in their only fourth-quarter possession. Meanwhile, Harriman added another touchdown in the third quarter when Nasir Stokes ran the ball in from 37 yards out.

The 45-0 victory brings Harriman’s overall record to 3-2 and Region 2 record to 1-1. The Blue Devils face visiting Rockwood in a non-region game next Friday. With the loss, Sunbright is now 1-3 overall and 0-3 in Region 2.
