Coalfield vs Carter Game Preview

By Greg Addington

The weekly prep took an about face as the game with Oakdale had to be postponed due to COVID-19 protocols and the Yellow Jackets picked up the Carter Hornets, who will invade Rochelle Field on Friday night.  It is the first meeting between the two schools since 1952 when Coach Bill Jacobs’ Jackets fell 13-6 to the Hornets on Rochelle Field.  Carter Head Coach Justin Pressley is familiar with Coalfield, having played and coached for Midway and also for Volunteer High School in Church Hill after a three-year stint as Head Coach at Lindblom Academy in Chicago.

The Jackets rolled last week to a 68-8 victory over Sunbright on Rochelle Field.  The Jackets ran for 443 yards in total offense, 342 of which coming via their ground attack.  Landon Lowe ran for 68 yards and a touchdown, and the Jackets also got rushing touchdowns from Levi Heidel (2), Landon Galyon, Coalton Henry and Canaan Bowling.  Cole Hines and Luke Treece each threw a touchdown pass to Levi Mullins and Tucker West and Matthew Meredith had an end zone fumble recovery for CHS.  Treece had seven PATs and Bryson Ridge kicked one to finish out the scoring.

The Hornets last week fell to Walker Valley 42-14 at home.  Carter runs a fast, up-tempo offense led by junior quarterback Chandler Wilson.  Last week against Walker Valley the Carter offense had 26 running plays and 60 passing attempts and gained 104 yards rushing and 257 yards passing with 37 completions.  Max Bailey, Brody Blankenship and Kash Altom are all capable targets in the passing game and Presean Brown provides a good change of pace from the running back position.  Defensively, Carter lines up primarily in a 3-4 and attacks the offense with aggressive linebackers.  Carter has good speed on both sides of the ball.

The Jackets and Hornets face off Friday night on Rochelle Field with kickoff at 7:30pm.
