Coalfield Overwhelms Wartburg 42-0

The Legacy Continues

By Terry Futrell

In an emotionally charged game, the Coalfield Yellow Jackets proved that the strength of their football program transcends changes in coaches and players. The Jackets used a balanced offensive attack and a smothering defense to down the Wartburg Bulldogs 42-0 Friday evening on Rochelle Field.

New Coalfield head coach Benson Napier was visibly calm on the sideline as his players meticulously picked apart the Bulldogs in every aspect of the game. Jacket quarterback Cole Hines was a true field general as he led his team in 310 yards of total offense. Having a host of capable runners receivers gave Hines all the flexibility he needed to move the ball effectively on the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs struggled to sustain an offensive attack. Losing 60 yards on 7 sacks, the Bulldogs netted only 30 yards total offense in 40 plays. To make matters worse, Bulldog quarterback Damon Duncan left the game with a broken collar bone in the second quarter.

The Coalfield defense turned in a stellar performance – the legacy of Jared Henry surely lives on. The Bulldog offensive line simply could not stop the pressure of the Jacket defense, failing to give good opportunities for plays to develop. Coalfield’s defensive pressure essentially took long passes out of Wartburg’s playbook.

The victory over the Bulldogs marked the 12th in a row for Coalfield, which last lost to Wartburg in 2009.
