Area Teams Affected by TSSAA Board of Control Decisions

By Terry Futrell

Several actions by the TSSAA Board of Control at its November 12 meeting affect area schools.

  • Approved Jellico’s request to move from Region 2 to Region 1 in Class 1A football.
Approved Jellico’s request to move from Region 2, District 3 to Region 1, District 2 in basketball, baseball, and softball.
Approved Jellico’s request to move from Region 2 to Region 1 in cross country.

It had been proposed to place Jellico in Region 2 Class 1A in football, which would have placed Jellico in the same region as Coalfield, Oakdale, and Sunbright. Based on the Board’s action, Region 2-1A will remain unchanged with the same teams that currently comprise the region.

  • Denied Tellico Plains’ request to move from Region 3 to Region 2 in Class 2A football.
  • Denied Meigs County’s request to move from Region 3 to Region 2 in football.

As previously proposed by TSSAA, Tellico Plains moves into Region 3 in Class 2A in football, certain to be one of the toughest regions in the state. The revamped Region 2 includes York Institute, Monterey, Oneida, Rockwood, and Wartburg. Tellico Plains had sought to join these teams in Region 2 and Meigs County had sought to remain in Region 2 – both requests were denied.
