By Terry Futrell
There were no surprises as the top four seeded teams in District 3A advanced to the semifinals Monday evening, promising fans two highly competitive semifinal matches at Harriman Tuesday evening beginning at 5:00 PM.
Coalfield defeats Monterey 3-0
No. 2 seed Coalfield defeated 7th seed Monterey 3-0 (25-11, 25-8. 25-19) at Coalfield. The difference maker for the Lady Jackets was their play at the net. Coalfield tallied 24 kills in the three sets, compared to only five kills for Monterey. Key for the Lady Jackets was the distribution of kills among several players, with Taylor Landrum, Alexis Morrison, Jayleigh Bunch, and Carlee Kees each recording multiple kills. Coalfield did a great job defensively as well with Libero Ashlyn Roberts playing a key role. Mallory Hill was instrumental in setting up the ball for Coalfield’s attacks at the net, and served nine consecutive points in the second set. Chastin Henry, Hallie Whitley, and Trinity Basler also contributed to the Lady Jacket victory. Coalfield served 20 aces in the match, with Taylor Landrum recording three aces in a row in both the second and third sets, and Carlee Kees serving three in a row in the third set.
Monterey was led by the net play of Gracie Hastings, Adeline Clouse, Amber Riddle, and Ashton Reed, who were faced with the challenge of defending and countering the Coalfield attacks at the net. Â Saige Bilbrey, Kacie McCowan, and Brooklyn Goss also contributed for Monterey. Coalfield will play 3rd-seed Clarkrange at 6:30 Pm on Tuesday at Harriman in the semifinals.
Wartburg Falls to Bledsoe County 3-0
The 5th-seed Wartburg Lady Bulldogs saw their season come to an end at the hands of 4th-seed Bledsoe County as they were defeated 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-23) in their quarterfinal match. Never giving up, the Lady Bulldogs took a 23-20 lead in the third set, only to see Bledsoe rebound and win the set 25-23 in a heartbreaker. Bledsoe County moves on to play top-seed Van Buren County in the semifinals on Tuesday at 5:00 PM at Harriman.
Oakdale Loses to Van Buren County 3-0
After defeating Oliver Springs in the play-in game on Friday, the Lady Eagles had to travel to Van Buren County and face the undefeated Eaglettes. It was a challenge that no District 3A team has met successfully throughout the entire season, so it was no surprise that Van Buren downed the Lady Eagles 3-0. Van Buren will play Bledsoe County at 5:00 PM Tuesday at Harriman in the semifinals.
Clarkrange Defeats Harriman 3-1
No. 6 Harriman made 3rd-seed Clarkrange earn it the hard way, but lost to the Lady Buffaloes 3-1 in quarterfinal action. The loss ends the season for Harriman, while Clarkrange moves on to play 2nd-seed Coalfield at 6:30 PM Tuesday at Harriman in the semifinals.
