Coalfield vs Midway Game Preview

By Greg Addington

Coalfield returns to action after an unscheduled one week break with Midway coming to Rochelle Field to face Coach Keith Henry’s Yellow Jackets.  Coach Ron Treadway’s Green Wave will be the most formidable test to date for Coalfield and both teams are looking for front runner status in the Region 2A race.

The Green Wave bolted out to a 20-0 lead at Tellico Plains and had to hold on for a 20-13 victory over the Bears.  Junior quarterback Emmett Hegland ran for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter and threw two touchdown passes to Jackson Snow for the three score advantage before Tellico rallied to tighten the contest.  Midway offensively will attack out of the spread with Hegland handing off to Ty Mason or looking to throw downfield to Snow, Caleb Goodman, Seth Gordon or Tucker Basham.  Hegland is as much a threat with his legs as he is with his arm and is one of the top quarterbacks in the region.  Defensively, Midway lined up in a 5-3 for much of the night against Tellico and may elect to try to neutralize Coalfield’s rushing attack by doing the same Friday.  Their line and linebackers were aggressive last week, especially early in the game.

Coalfield received word mid-week that Gordonsville had players that had COVID-19, resulting in the first forfeit win for the program since 1988.  The Yellow Jackets are undefeated in the region (3-0) and for the season (5-0) and are looking to extend their winning streak over the Green Wave to seven, however Coach Henry and his staff and the players know that Midway will be a tough opponent.  This will be the first of three crucial region games which will decide Coalfield’s playoff future in the 2020 season.  Coalfield and Midway face off Friday night on Rochelle Field with kickoff scheduled for 7:30pm.
