Coalfield vs Gordonsville Preview (Canceled)
Game Canceled due to Covid-19 at Gordonsville
By Greg Addington
Coalfield steps outside of region play this week hosting the Gordonsville Tigers on Rochelle Field. The Tigers look to face Monterey on October 30th in a showdown for the Region 4A title but must first navigate the trap that surely awaits them on Coal Hill Road set by Coach Keith Henry and the Yellow Jackets. This is the third meeting between the two schools and the first appearance for Gordonsville in Coalfield. The Jackets and Tigers met for the first time in the 2012 Class A semifinals, a game that Gordonsville won on the way to securing the state title. Coalfield got some measure of revenge last season and are looking to take the rubber match on Friday.
Coach Scott Clemons’ Tigers defeated Clay County last week on Turney Ford Field in Gordonsville by a final score of 20-0. Senior running back Darrell Holt scored two touchdowns in the win and the Tiger defense pitched their second shutout of the season. The offense is led by Sophomore quarterback Matthew Albritton, who missed last year’s game due to injury. Holt and Tyler Gregory will appear in the backfield at times with either or both threats to run with a direct snap and either can line up by themselves in a Wildcat formation to run. Their line is solid and aggressive on blocks and the Tigers will line up in a base spread formation when not running a Wildcat. Defensively, the Tigers will show multiple looks toward the offense but will go with either a 4-3 or a 5-2 alignment much of the time.
Last week the Yellow Jackets bested Oakdale on Rochelle Field 44-12 behind three Seth Lowe rushing touchdowns. Coalfield as a team ran for 294 yards on the night, a performance that Coach Keith Henry would certainly enjoy seeing repeated this week. Seth Lowe ran for 92 yards on 14 carries and led a season high 11 different Yellow Jacket runners in toting the rock for Offensive Coordinator Jason Wilson. Coalfield was led defensively by Landon Lowe and Nick Cagley who both had seven tackles apiece. Isaiah Sheldon stopped a first half Oakdale possession with a diving interception off a twice tipped pass and Levi Mullins and Jayden Wright both recovered Eagle fumbles.
Coalfield hosts Gordonsville within the friendly confines of Harlan Walls Stadium on Friday night with kickoff set for 7:30pm.
