By Terry Futrell

The Coalfield Lady Jackets volleyball team continued to roll Thursday evening as they defeated Oliver Springs 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-15). The balance of the Lady Jackets becomes more apparent every match as different players step forward to lead the charge.  This evening was Alexis Morrison’s and Mallory Hill’s turn to shine as each demonstrated their skill at the service line.

The Lady Jackets took a commanding 12-3 lead in the first set before the Lady Bobcats could hold serve for their first offensive point. Coalfield led 16-7 when Carlee Kees served two aces in three serves to extend the lead to 19-7. Oliver Springs held serve for only one more offensive point and Coalfield closed out the set 25-11.

Both teams struggled offensively to begin the second set. With Coalfield leading 3-2, Alexis Morrison took control and served four aces followed by four more points to extend the Coalfield lead to 11-2. The teams battled to 16-8 when Carlee Kees served three consecutive points to take a 19-9 lead. After that, it was a sprint to the finish line with Coalfield winning the set 25-13.

The third set was much the same with Coalfield leading 4-2 when Mallory Hill stepped up to serve. Hill served nine consecutive points to give the Lady Jackets a 13-2 lead. Oliver Springs closed the gap to 16-8 before Taylor Landrum served two points, including an ace, to give the Lady Jackets a 10-point lead. The teams then battled point-for-point and Coalfield took the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

The Lady Jackets have lost only to Van Buren County and remain in second place in District 3A rankings.
