Oakdale Downs Jellico 18-8

By Terry Futrell

Though dark clouds filled the sky as the remnants of Hurricane Laura passed through, the sun shone brightly for Coach J.R. Voyles as his Oakdale Eagles turned in an impressive performance by defeating the visiting Jellico Blue Devils 18-8 on Hollis Eble Field Friday evening. The win gave the Eagles a 2-0 start to the 2020 season, a feat last accomplished in 2017 and achieved only three times in the past 20 years.

The limited preseason practice was evident as both teams made critical mistakes early in the game. A 40-yard pass completion by Jellico late in the first quarter put the Blue Devils in position to score. Jellico scored on a 2-yard run early in the second quarter and converted for two points.

Oakdale responded with freshman Nehemiah Cooney scoring his first Eagle touchdown at 8:19 in the second quarter on a 2-yard run. The conversion failed and the Blue Devils took an 8-6 lead into halftime.

Things began to click for the Eagles offensively in the second half. Quarterback Tyler Boyer completed 7 of 8 passes in the second half for 83 yards and rushed for two more Eagle touchdowns, giving Oakdale an 18-8 lead, which would be the final margin of the Eagle victory.

The Eagle defense shut down Jellico’s offense in the second half, limiting the Blue Devils to 34 yards in 10 carries and only four completions for 15 yards. Oakdale racked up three tackles for loss in the fourth quarter.

The steady play of the Eagle defense throughout the game and the never give up attitude of the Oakdale offense were key factors in the Oakdale victory. The Eagle defense held Jellico to 180 total yards offense, while Oakdale racked up 346 yards total offense.
