Coalfield Downs Oakdale in Volleyball 3-0

By Terry Futrell

The Coalfield Lady Jackets maintained their perfect volleyball record by downing the Oakdale Lady Eagles 3-0 at home Tuesday evening. Using their height advantage over the Lady Eagles, Coalfield viciously attacked at the net throughout the match. Coalfield’s Alexis Morrison proved to be a terror at the net, driving spikes at the Lady Eagles throughout the match that were simply too hard to handle.

Oakdale led the first set until Taylor Landrum began serving with the score tied 7-7. Landrum served five aces in her first six serves and scored seven aces as she held serve for eleven consecutive points. The Lady Eagles took the serve trailing 18-8 and could never hold serve through the remainder of the set. Carlee Kees closed out the set for the Lady Jackets by serving three points, including one ace. Coalfield won the set 25-9.

After Coalfield jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set, Amelia Clark served five points for the Lady Eagles, with the first four being aces, and Oakdale led 6-4. The Lady Eagles held their own until the score was tied 11-11. At that point, Carlee Kees took control of the set by serving eight consecutive points for the Lady Jackets, giving them a 19-12 lead. Coalfield held on to win the set 25-16.

Coalfield took an early 7-3 lead in the third set. Alexis Morrison proved she could also be deadly serving the ball and the Lady Jackets scored six consecutive points. Three of Morrison’s serves were vicious drives that the Lady Eagles could not return. With the Lady Jackets leading 16-5, Taylor Landrum stepped up and served five consecutive points to take a 21-5 lead. An Oakdale rally behind the serving of Bellamy Croft fell short and Coalfield took the set 25-10 and the match 3-0.

Earlier in the evening, the Coalfield junior varsity defeated Oakdale 2-0 (25-23, 25-20).
