Coalfield at Gordonsville Game Preview
By Greg Addington
Coalfield hits the road again, traveling west on I-40 to play Gordonsville in a rematch of the 2012 playoff semifinal game. Coach Keith Henry is looking for his fifth win of 2019, but can also pick up his 100th win as head coach at Coalfield High School and his 150th career win on Friday night. The Jackets would love to pick up a measure of revenge for the loss in 2012 and also add to their three-game winning streak.
Last week Coalfield defeated Oakdale on Hollis Eble Field by a final score of 50-0. Seven different Jackets reached the end zone with Seth Lowe, Peyton McKinney and Cole Hines each reaching the end zone on the ground and Jacob Bunch, Anthony Foster, and Hayden West each catching a touchdown pass. McKinney threw for one of the scores and Zach Armstrong threw for two. Dawson Nitzschke returned an interception 78-yards for the defense. Armstrong, McKinney, and Hines combined for 232 yards passing on the night and 23 Yellow Jackets had at least one tackle.
Gordonsville lost to Clay County in Celina last Friday night, 35-6. The lone score was on a Wyatt Pemberton touchdown run. Gordonsville has been fighting the injury bug, which claimed freshman starting quarterback Matthew Albritton earlier in the year. If he is unable to go Friday, duties will likely be shared by Treyson Davis and Grant Underwood. Underwood looks to be the better passer with Pemberton, Peyton Climer, and Will Dudney the targets in the passing game. Against Clay County, Gordonsville lined up with both Pemberton and Underwood running out of the wildcat formation. Clay County was able to get consistent pressure on Gordonsville’s offense from their four down linemen. On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers showed a 4-2-5 defense for much of the night. Clay reached the edge on boundary runs fairly often. Davis is good at coming up to stop the run from his safety position.
Coalfield faces Gordonsville on Friday night from Turney Ford Field in Gordonsville. Kickoff is scheduled for 8pm eastern/7pm central time.
