Coalfield vs Sunbright Game Preview
By Greg Addington
Coalfield celebrates Homecoming on Friday night, hosting the Sunbright Tigers for a key region 2A contest. The Jacket-Tiger rivalry is the longest continuous rivalry for CHS going back to at least 1945 and potentially going back to the first meeting between the two schools which occurred in 1942, which was the first game in Sunbright school’s history.
Last week the Tigers fell to Greenback at Cooper Field in Greenback, 61-20. It was the first loss of the season for Sunbright and the first win of the year for the Cherokees. Jonathon Hammock and Ethan Hammock led the way in the Tiger ground game, combining for 90-yards rushing and each scoring a touchdown. Houston Bryant scored on a 75-yard sprint. Greenback was in the unusual position of playing for their first win of the year after dropping games to Loudon and Meigs County. Sunbright is in position to play meaningful games down the stretch as Coach Brian Hamby would love nothing but to earn a playoff berth in his first season as head coach.
Coalfield earned a 36-7 win last week at Harriman as Coach Keith Henry’s Jackets won their first region game of the year. Peyton McKinney scored two touchdowns rushing on 91 yards and added three touchdown passes on 14 of 24 through the air. Dawson Nitzchke, Isaac Vanwitzenburg and Anthony Foster each caught a touchdown pass and Daniel Schaar again led the way defensively with 13 total tackles, four of which were solo.
Coalfield hosts Sunbright on Rochelle Field for the annual Homecoming game with the kickoff set for 7:30 pm.
