Lady Bulldogs Come from Behind to Defeat Oakdale 3-0

The Wartburg Central Lady Bulldog volleyball team fought from behind to win the first two sets, then staved off an Oakdale comeback to win the third set and the match 3-0 at Wartburg Tuesday evening.
The Lady Eagles quickly jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set as Breanna Letner served five consecutive points. Wartburg came back with Ryleigh Wade serving to score seven consecutive points, including three aces, to give the Lady Bulldogs a 10-7 lead. Wartburg led 17-10 when Madilyn Armes served seven points, including three aces, to give the Lady Bulldogs an overwhelming 23-11 lead. Wartburg won the set 25-13.
The lead changed back-and-forth in the second set before Oakdale took a 10-7 lead. Wartburg came back to tie at 11-11 with Autumn Reeves serving three consecutive aces and took the lead 13-11. Oakdale fought back and tied the set at 15-15 with Breanna Letner serving an ace. The teams traded point-for-point until Wartburg took the lead at 20-19 on an ace by Madilyn Armes. The Lady Bulldogs never looked back and took the set 25-20.
The Lady Bulldogs totally dominated the beginning of the third set, stepping out to an 11-1 lead over Oakdale. Oakdale fought back to cut the lead to 14-8, only to see Wartburg’s Savannah Tinch serve five consecutive points, including two aces, to extend the Lady Bulldog lead to 19-8. Oakdale continued to fight back, closing the gap to three points at 22-19. From there, the teams traded points with the Lady Bulldogs winning the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
Wartburg’s low, driving serves appeared to be the primary differentiator in the match, with the Lady Bulldogs serving 17 aces, compared to only eight for the Lady Eagles.
Wartburg also won the preliminary junior varsity match 2-0.
