Sunbright Lady Tigers Get Revenge on Midway 10-3 – April 22, 2019

After losing to Midway 4-1 just four days earlier, the Sunbright Lady Tigers wasted no time in making a statement on Midway’s home field. Taking a 6-0 lead in the 1st inning, the Lady Tigers continued their attack, downing the Lady Waves 10-3 in seven innings.
Ashlin Trent led off for the Lady Tigers, drawing a walk from Midway pitcher Aubrie May. Trent advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, then moved to 3rd on a single to left field by Callie Smith. Trent scored on a passed ball and Smith advanced to 3rd. Smith then scored on a passed ball, and Hannah Shannon drew a walk.
Taylor Cox walked, moving Shannon to 2nd base. With Lindsey Brown at bat, Shannon moved to 3rd base on an error by Midway. Brown struck out, leaving runners on 1st and 3rd. Cox stole second, giving Sunbright runners on 2nd and 3rd with Zoe Jones at bat. Jones singled on a pop fly, scoring Shannon.
Grace Daniel doubled on a bunt to 3rd baseman Rebecca Lemasters, scoring Cox with Jones advancing to 3rd.
Lily Davis popped out to Shortstop Caitlyn Ross, leaving runners at 2nd and 3rd. Madison Burchfield hit a long fly to left field and reached 2nd on an error by Midway, scoring Jones and Daniel. Ashlin Trent came up to bat for the 2nd time in the inning and was struck by a pitched ball. Smith then grounded out to pitcher Aubrie May, ending the top of the 1st inning with Sunbright leading 6-0.
After Midway went 3-and-out in the bottom of the 1st inning, Hannah Shannon led off for Sunbright, hitting a long ball over the center field fence for a solo home run. Midway retaliated in the bottom of the 2nd when Emma Hill singled on a ground ball to 3rd, scoring Kadie Lewis. Sunbright led 7-1 after two innings.
Sunbright added two more runs in the top of the 3rd after Burchfield singled on a ground ball to 3rd and Smith singled on a deep fly to left field. Sophie Patterson singled for Midway in the bottom of the 3rd and scored when Marissa Stakley tripled on a fly ball to right field. Sunbright’s lead grew to 9-2 after three innings.
The teams continued to battle through two scoreless innings. Sunbright added another run in the top of the 6th inning after Trent singled to get on base, then scored on a single by Cox. Midway’s sole base runner in the bottom of the 6th was tagged out trying to steal 2nd base. Sunbright led 10-2 after six innings.
Sunbright went 3-and-out in the top of the 7th inning. Midway’s Kadie Lewis reached base on a Sunbright error, and then scored when Caitlyn Ross hit a hard line drive down the left field line. The Lady Waves could not score again, and Sunbright earned a 10-3 victory.
Pitcher Zoe Jones was credited with the victory for Sunbright, limiting the Lady Waves to four hits while striking out three. Aubrie May was the losing pitcher for Midway, giving up six hits and striking out one. Rilea Ellison pitched in relief for Midway, giving up two hits while striking out two.
The win gives Sunbright a 4-6 record in District 3A and 9-8 overall. With the loss, Midway’s record in district play is 5-9, with a 5-11 overall record.
