Lady Jackets Overpowered by Oneida 73-21
The Coalfield Lady Jackets found the Oneida Lady Indians to be too formidable a challenge, losing 73-21. Oneida built a 24-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, holding the Lady Jackets to four points in each of three of the four quarters of play. The Lady Indians put on an offensive show, hitting 25 baskets, including 10 3-pointers, in the contest. Coalfield was only able to connect on five baskets, including one 3-point basket.
Coalfield’s scoring was distributed among eight players, with Gabby Lowe leading with six points. Thirteen Lady Indians put points on the board. Chelsea Newport and Kendyl West led the way with 10 points each for Oneida.
The Lady Indians continue to sit atop District 3-1A with a 9-0 district record. Coalfield falls to 2-7 in the district and remains in seventh place.
Oneida Defeats Coalfield Boys 82-52
The Oneida Indians handily defeated the Coalfield Yellow Jackets 82-52. Oneida jumped out to a 33-16 lead in the first quarter with Nathan Bowling and Dalton Yancey combining for 20 points in the first period. The Indians held a 52-27 halftime lead and cruised to the 82-52 victory. Oneida outpaced the Jackets, scoring 33 baskets to Coalfield’s 20 baskets.
Coalfield was led in scoring by Isaac Vanwitzenburg with 15 points. Nathan Bowling led the Indians with 17 points, even though he only played the first half. Dalton Yancey added 13 points for Oneida.
With the victory, Oneida remains in a three-way tie with Oakdale and Wartburg for second place in District 3-1A with a 7-2 record. The Jackets are now in last place in the district with a 1-8 district record.
Lady Eagles Overwhelm Rockwood 34-16
After falling behind 13-9 in the first quarter, the Oakdale Lady Eagles clamped down on defense and held the Rockwood Lady Tigers to a total of three points in the last three quarters. Oakdale walked away with a 34-16 victory.
Rockwood’s Karlee Bowling began the game with a hot hand, sinking two 3-point baskets and scoring nine points in the first quarter for the Tigers. Oakdale Coach Fred Snow made an adjustment in his zone defense and totally shut down the Lady Tiger offense, allowing them only one point in the second period, none in the third, and one 2-point basket in the final period.
Oakdale was led by Darby Francis, who sank two 3-point baskets and scored 10 points. Victoria Jones and Ivy Tilson each scored eight points for the Lady Eagles. Bowling finished the game with 10 points for Rockwood.
Oakdale now has a 4-5 record in District 3-1A and sits solidly in sixth place. Rockwood is winless in the district and is in last place.
Oakdale Boys Defeat Rockwood in 66-62 Overtime Thriller
Rockwood took an early 13-12 lead in the first period only to see the Eagles fight back for a 31-29 halftime advantage. Oakdale extended their lead to 50-44 after three, but the fourth quarter was all Rockwood as they outscored Oakdale 11-5 to end the game tied at 55-55. Oakdale once again took control in overtime, defeating the Tigers 66-62 in a game that was suspenseful to the very end.
Oakdale had four players in double figures. Clayton Smith led the way with 16 points, including three clutch 3-point baskets in the second quarter when Oakdale had fallen behind. Dawson Smith and Rhett Nelson each had 15 points and Garrett Best scored 11 points. Nate Brackett led all scorers with 28 points for the Tigers. Tahj Bazel added 13 points for Rockwood.
Oakdale extended their district record to 7-2 and is in a three-way tie for second place with Oneida and Wartburg. Rockwood falls to 5-4 in district play and is in fifth place.
Sunbright Girls Defeat Oliver Springs 44-33
The Sunbright Lady Tigers used a 6-1 3-point shot advantage to overpower the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats 44-33. Sunbright led 12-8 after the first period and maintained their lead throughout the game. Sunbright outpaced the Lady Bobcats 10-6 at the free throw line, hitting 83% of their shots.
The Lady Tigers were led by Hannah Shannon with 12 points, including two 3-point baskets. Lexi Griffith also scored two 3-point baskets. Griffith and Taylor Cox each scored eight points for Sunbright. Oliver Springs was led by Laci Hester with eight points.
The win extends Sunbright to a 7-2 district record and the Lady Tigers sit alone in second place behind Oneida, which has a 9-0 district record. Oliver Springs now has 5-4 record and is in fifth place in District 3-1A.
Sunbright Boys Down Oliver Springs 77-60 with Balanced Scoring Attack
The Sunbright Tigers used balanced scoring among their five starters to down the Oliver Springs Bobcats 77-60. Sunbright was never outscored in any of the four quarters and cruised to victory over the Bobcats.
Hunter Bunch and John Freels led the Tigers with 20 points each. Josh Langley was close behind with 16 points, Wes Bohanan scored 10 points, and Jacob Freytag added nine points. Both Freytag and Freels scored three 3-point baskets. Blake Nation poured in 19 points for the Bobcats, including three 3-point baskets. Riley Walker added 17 points for Oliver Springs.
Sunbright now has a 3-6 district record and sits alone in sixth place ahead of Midway, Oliver Springs, and Coalfield. The Bobcats fall to 1-8 in District 3-1A and are in eighth place.
Wartburg Lady Bulldogs Fall to Midway 51-47
The Wartburg Central Lady Bulldogs led Midway 15-14 at the end of one, only to see the Lady Wave fight back for a 24-24 tie at the half. Midway outscored Wartburg 9-4 in the third quarter and the Lady Bulldogs could never recover, falling to Midway 51-47.
Madison Holley led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets. Madison Williams contributed 11 points for Wartburg. Midway had three players in double figures. Paige Bacon led the Lady Wave with 15 points, and Caitlyn Ross and Rebecca Lemasters added 13 points each. Midway hit 20 baskets from the field, compared to only 13 for the Lady Bulldogs. Wartburg had the advantage in free throws, shooting 15 compared to Midway’s five.
Wartburg has now lost five of their last six games, but holds a 6-3 district record. The loss to Midway drops Wartburg to fourth place in District 3-1A behind Oneida, Sunbright, and Midway. Midway also has a 6-3 district record but has defeated Wartburg twice. Midway is in third place in the district.
Wartburg Bulldogs Finish Strong to Defeat Midway 84-68
After being tied at the end of one, the Wartburg Central Bulldogs outscored the Midway Green Wave each of the last three quarters to cruise to an 84-68 victory. The Bulldogs fired in eight 3-point baskets in the victory – four by Colby Justes and two each by Elijah Langley and Jake Branstetter.
The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures. Elijah Langley led with 22 points, followed closely by Jake Branstetter with 20 points. Colby Justes added 16 points and Tyler Davis came off the bench to score 15 points. Midway had five players score in double figures in the defeat. Hunter Mims led with 14 points, followed by Brendan Burnum with 13 points. Braeden Schleben, Blaine Townsend, and Emmet Hegland each scored 10 points.
Wartburg now has a 7-2 district record and is in a three-way tie with Oakdale and Oneida for second place in District 3-1A. Midway falls to 2-7 in district play and is in seventh place.
