Girls

Coalfield 41, Oliver Springs 52

The Coalfield Lady Jackets fell to the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats 52-41 in John Jackson Memorial Gymnasium. The Lady Jackets remain winless in district play with a 0-4 record. With the victory, Oliver Springs is 4-2 in district play and is positioned in 4th place in District 3-1A.

Oakdale 26, Oneida 62

The Oakdale Lady Eagles fell to 2-4 in District 3-1A play as they were defeated at home 62-26 by the Oneida Lady Indians. Oneida’s defense limited the Lady Eagles to a total of seven baskets from the field in the game, compared to Oneida’s 23 baskets. Oneida jumped out to a 22-9 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Lady Eagles stayed with Oneida in the 2nd period scoring half of their total points. Oneida led 36-22 at the half, and then came back to almost totally shut down Oakdale, who scored only four points in the second half. Oakdale was led in scoring by Delaney Hicks with nine points. Darby Francis and Victoria Jones each had six points. Oneida was led by Kendyl West with 11 points and Shay Buttram with 10 points. Oneida remains undefeated in district play along with Wartburg Central and Sunbright.

Sunbright 55, Rockwood 17

The Sunbright Lady Tigers once again showed they are a force to be reckoned with in District 3-1A by overwhelming the Rockwood Lady Tigers 55-17. Sunbright remains undefeated in district play with a 4-0 record, along with Wartburg and Oneida which are also undefeated. Ten Sunbright players scored against Rockwood, led by Olivia Northrup with 14 points and Makenna Brown with 11 points. Sunbright connected on 21 shots from the field and a blistering 92% of their free throws (11 of 12). Sunbright’s defense held Rockwood to four baskets for the entire game.

Wartburg 57, Harriman 20

The Wartburg Central Lady Bulldogs defeated Harriman 57-20, with 11 Lady Bulldogs scoring in the game. Wartburg connected on 19 field goals, compared to seven for the Lady Blue Devils. Wartburg led 29-7 at the half and outscored Harriman 28-13 in the 2nd half. Wartburg was led in scoring by Madison Holley with 10 points and Megan Williams with nine points. Seven Lady Bulldogs scored 3-point baskets, including two each by Holley, Regan Redmon, and Elizabeth Keathley. The win gives the Lady Bulldogs a perfect 5-0 record in district play. Both Sunbright and Oneida also have perfect 4-0 records.

Boys

Coalfield 61, Oliver Springs 62

The Coalfield Yellow Jackets came close to pulling off one of the best comebacks of the young 2018 basketball season, but fell short, losing to the Oliver Springs Bobcats 62-61. After trailing by 10 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Jackets poured in 25 points in the 4th quarter. Both teams rained 3-pointers as Coalfield connected on nine treys and Oliver Springs burned the nets with 11. Coalfield scored on 25 shots from the field and Oliver Springs scored on only 22. As in other games this season, free throws were decisive in the victory. The Jackets only had four free throw attempts and were successful on two. Oliver Springs had 14 shots from the charity stripe, connecting on seven. Eight Yellow Jackets scored, led by Keigan White with 15 points and Kyle Seiber with 13 points. Jeffrey Speer and Isaac Basler each scored three 3-point shots. The Bobcats were led by Riley Walker with 17 points, Bryson Williford with 14 points, and Blake Nation with 13 points. Coalfield drops to 1-3 in district play. The victory was the Bobcats first in district play, giving them a 1-5 record.

Oakdale 70, Oneida 63

In a game marred by fouls, the Oakdale Eagles pulled out a 70-63 victory over the Oneida Indians. A total of 53 fouls were called in the game – 30 against Oneida and 23 against Oakdale. While other game stats were relatively equal between the two teams, Oakdale shot 35 free throws, compared to only 27 for Oneida. Three Oneida players fouled out of the game. Oneida led the Eagles 32-27 at the half. Oakdale scored 25 points in the 3rd quarter and took the lead 52-50. The Eagles continued to outpace the Indians in the 4thquarter 18-13. Oakdale had four players score in double figures – Dawson Smith with 19 points, Garret Best with 15 points, Clayton Smith with 12 points, and Ian Goldston with 10 points. Oneida’s Chance Botts led all scorers with 29 points, including four 3-pointers. The Eagles are now 5-1 in district play and move back into first place, having previously beaten Harriman, which is also 5-1. Oneida drops to 2-2 in district play.

Sunbright 39, Rockwood 49

After holding a 31-28 advantage at the end of three quarters, the Sunbright Tigers allowed Rockwood to outscore them 21-8 in the 4th quarter and lost the game 49-39. Fouls were a difference-maker, as Sunbright was whistled 15 times to Rockwood’s nine. Rockwood’s Tahj Bazel took control in the 4th quarter, scoring seven points, including five-for-five free throw shooting. Sunbright was led by Wes Bohanan with 19 points and Hunter Bunch with 10 points. For Rockwood, Bazel had 13 points and Brett Sands had 10 points. Rockwood evens their District 3-1A record at 2-2. Sunbright remains winless in the district with an 0-4 record.

Wartburg 72, Harriman 74

In another game dominated by fouls, the district-leading Wartburg Central Bulldogs fell to the Harriman Blue Devils 74-72. A total of 52 fouls were called – 29 against Harriman and 23 against Wartburg. Both teams connected on 25 field goals, but the Blue Devils shot 83% of their free throws, while the Bulldogs connected on only 62%. The Bulldogs had a chance to tie at the end, but missed on several attempts in the very congested area around the basket. Wartburg had four players score in double figures – Colby Justes, Brian Hamby, and Jake Branstetter with 13 points each, and Caleb Constant with 12 points. Harriman was led by Trezdin Copeland with 28 points and Jalen McCullum with 25 points. Known for his 3-point shooting ability, Copeland scored all of his points in the paint against the Bulldogs. The loss drops the Bulldogs from first place in the district to third with a 4-1 record. Harriman joins Oakdale at the top with 5-1 records, but Oakdale takes over the number one spot because of having previously beaten Harriman.
