Eagles Trounce Bobcats 78-52
By Terry Futrell – November 27, 2018
Recipe: one part NASCAR speed, one part Rainmaker, and one part PT Barnum. We’re not sure what to call it, but Oakdale basketball fans witnessed the final product this evening as the Eagles used their lightning fast speed and ability to make it rain 3-pointers to trounce Oliver Springs 78-52, putting on a show that would make even PT Barnum envious.
The Eagles came out of the blocks with a dizzying display of fast-paced offense and full-court pressure defense that simply overwhelmed Oliver Springs, taking an 18-0 lead before the Bobcats finally got on the board with 1:22 left in the first period.
The Eagles built their lead to 27-4 with 6:57 left in the second period before Oliver Springs showed any ability to put points on the board. Oakdale then cruised to a commanding 46-23 lead at halftime. Weather radar showed an unusual disturbance over Oakdale as the Eagles made it rain 3-pointers, sinking ten treys in the first half alone, far outnumbering their six 2-point baskets. Half of those ten 3-pointers were contributed by Clayton Smith, who sank four in the second period.
The Eagles continued their assault after intermission, building their lead to 72-38 after three periods. Coach Travis Nelson substituted freely in the fourth period and the Bobcats were able to close the gap somewhat, but the Eagles still walked away with an impressive 78-52 victory over their first District 3A opponent of the season.
The numbers tell the remarkable story of the Eagles performance this evening. Oakdale shot a red-hot 64% from 2-point range and 46% from beyond the 3-point line for an overall 55% field goal percentage. The Eagles snagged 26 defensive rebounds and committed only seven turnovers in the contest.
The Eagles had four players in double figures: Dawson Smith and Clayton Smith each had 17 points, Garrett Best was close behind with 16 points, and Rhett Nelson added 15 points.
Their overwhelming victory over Oliver Springs serves notice that the Eagles will be a major factor this season in deciding the outcome of the District 3A race. The Eagles travel to Harriman Friday evening for another District 3A contest that will paint an even better picture of the season ahead.
