Sunbright Tigers Swamped by the Greenwave
By Terry Futrell – October 12, 2018
The Sunbright Tigers found the Midway Greenwave to be too much to handle, both offensively and defensively, as they fell by a score of 46-6 on Midway’s home field tonight. Because four minutes were wiped off the clock at the end of the first half after an extended injury delay and the third and fourth quarters were reduced to eight minutes each, the two teams really only played the equivalent of three quarters of football.
Sunbright took the opening kickoff and began marching down the field, making two first downs thanks to an 11-yard run by Wes Bohanan and a 13-yard pass from Bohanan to Ethan Hammock. Just as the Sunbright players and fans were sensing that tonight would be different, Sunbright had a bad snap from center at midfield that was recovered by a Midway defender, who ran the ball back 40 yards for a Greenwave touchdown.
Turnovers by the Tigers proved to be a dominant theme throughout the game. Sunbright fumbled six times, and five were recovered by Midway. The Tigers also lost the ball once when a Wes Bohanan pass was intercepted by Midway, which scored on the very next play. Midway had their own case of fumbleitis, losing two of two fumbles to Sunbright.
But the real story of the game was the defensive strength of the Greenwave, who held Sunbright to 73 yards rushing on 29 attempts and 37 yards passing for a total of 110 yards offense. The Tigers’ fill-in quarterback Wes Bohanan completed 3 of 11 passes for 37 yards and one interception.
Midway continued to put up some big numbers on offense, just as they have all season with quarterback Jason Taylor at the helm. Against the Tigers, Midway rushed 11 times for 190 yards, including a 71-yard run by Gabe Moore for a touchdown. Taylor completed 6 of 7 passes for 136 yards, bringing the total Greenwave offensive output to 326 yards.
Midway was up 40-0 at the half and the Greenwave subs added another score at the end of the shortened third quarter. Sunbright kept the ball the entire eight minutes of the fourth quarter, advancing the ball from their own 41-yard line to the Midway 1-yard line. From there, Wes Bohanan ran the ball into the end zone for the Tigers only score. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 46-6 in favor of Midway. Time expired immediately after the Sunbright kickoff.
Sunbright moves on to face Lookout Valley on the road next week, while the Greenwave gear up to face Greenback, the No. 1 team in the state.
