Coalfield Romps over Oakdale

By Terry Futrell – September 16, 2018

No, it wasn’t the Barkley Fall Classic – that would be run the next day at Frozen Head. But, for the Oakdale Eagles, their football encounter with the Coalfield Yellow Jackets Friday evening was a challenge that was just as formidable. And, like so many Barkley contestants, the Eagles were doomed from the start.

The carnage began as Peyton McKinney returned the Oakdale kickoff for a 71-yard touchdown, only to have it nullified by a facemask penalty against the Yellow Jackets. But, no matter. After another 15-yard penalty against the Jackets for a block in the back, Coalfield’s Ashton Jones romped downfield for 48 yards to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Woodward. At this point, the game was essentially over.

The game can be summarized by one statement – Coach Jared Henry’s defense totally shut down the Eagles’ offense. In the eight offensive series run by Oakdale, the Eagles rushed 15 times for a net gain of 2 yards, while completing 4 of 9 passes for 17 yards and 1 interception.

Meanwhile, Coach Jason Wilson’s Yellow Jacket offense was running on all cylinders. With 13 different players running the ball, the Jackets racked up 418 yards on the ground in 25 rushing attempts. The Jackets rushing attack was spearheaded by a 48-yard run by Ashton Jones and an 81-yard touchdown run by Jacob Bunch. Quarterback Lance Byrd completed 5 of 7 passes for 53 yards and 1 touchdown, and freshman Landon Lowe completed 1 of 2 passes for 3 yards.

Coalfield travels to Marion County next Friday where they will take on the 1-3 Warriors.

Oakdale has an open date and an opportunity to recover from the Yellow Jacket onslaught before meeting Sunbright on September 28.
