Lady Bulldogs Sneak by Coalfield

It was a wild evening in the gymnasium at Wartburg Central High School as the Lady Bulldogs came from behind to defeat the Coalfield Lady Jackets 3 games to 2 in a very close volleyball match. Fans were treated to two and one-half hours of non-stop action that went down to the wire.

Both teams came out strong in Game 1, aggressively attacking the net. However, the Lady Bulldogs were plagued with errors, committing four unforced attack errors and four service errors. The game was tied at 10-10 before the Lady Jackets pulled away to win 25-11.

Game 2 was a close one all the way to the finish. The score was tied 15 times as neither team could gain an advantage. Finally, after the score was knotted at 23 all, Wartburg managed to score two straight for the win at 25-23.

The pendulum swung the other direction in Game 3 as the Lady Jackets put on an impressive performance, scoring four service aces and blocking two Lady Bulldog attempts at the net. Although they also scored four service aces, the Lady Bulldogs trailed for the entire game and Coalfield won handily 25-16.

Game 4 began with a lot of folks thinking it would soon be over, but not the Lady Bulldogs who came out fighting. The lead see-sawed until Wartburg went ahead 6-5 and never trailed again. The Lady Jackets made a run for it, closing the gap to 21-19, but Wartburg pulled away to win it 25-19.

As the Game 5 tie-breaker began, the fans were really getting excited and the noise level in the gym increased dramatically. Coalfield aggressively attacked the net and scored first. The Lady Bulldogs quickly answered, tying the score at 1-1, then pulled ahead and never trailed again. The Lady Jackets fought back and came within one point at 9-8, but Wartburg fought off the Coalfield advance and pulled away to win 15-11.

This was an exciting volleyball match that will not soon be forgotten by the players and fans. There was jubilation on the part of the Lady Bulldogs, while disappointment was the reward for the young ladies from Coalfield. But, there was no shame for either team in this match – both played their hearts out! As for the fans who made it to the match, they were rewarded no matter which team they rooted for. On the other hand, fans who didn’t make it out to witness this tremendous volleyball match were the only real losers tonight.

The Coalfield Junior Varsity defeated the Wartburg JV 2 games to 1 (25-13, 21-25, 15-11).
